In My Fluffy Pajamas: Ferry Building
An opportunity to connect with a diverse intersection of the San Francisco community
In My Fluffy Pajamas has one more event at Ferry Building tomorrow, Sunday November 17th, from 11am - 2 pm. Join us!
In My Fluffy Pajamas not only includes the intimate workshops that we started with but has also grown to include participatory art experiences in public spaces. In Fall 2024, we are honored to have a space at The Ferry Building where we can present this work and interact with a diverse group of people.
What’s unique about The Ferry Building is that it holds such a rich mixture of people who live in San Francisco and people who are just visiting, immigrants who are new here and generations who have lived here for a long time and people from various countries and cities who might like to live here someday. This presents a really special opportunity to create connections through creativity.
In our intimate workshops, we delve into deep personal histories. However, we use a different approach in our public activities, so as not to trigger trauma in a space that can’t safely contain it. Instead, we ask people to consider a few questions related to their hometown and then to draw images on a collective piece of fabric in response to those questions. People who wish to verbalize their stories with us are invited to do so, either 1:1 with Badri or Kathryn or in small groups. However, that is certainly not a requirement of participation.
As all of the different images come together, we can feel the energy of connection. People from so many different backgrounds are all welcome in this one place, are all sharing space with one another, and it’s a truly powerful thing.
Our first Ferry Building presentation was immediately following the 2024 election results. Many people were feeling raw and vulnerable, and we didn’t want to do anything to further trigger that. Instead, we wanted to create a place where we everyone could just sit for a moment, draw, breathe together, and add their own voice to a collective visual narrative that celebrates all humans.
There were the questions that we chose to have people consider:
Here are some of the responses that we received:
We are very grateful to Center for Art and Public Life for the grant that allowed these Ferry Building interactions to take place and, of course, to The Ferry Building for making this space available to us.
