From Silk Road to San Francisco at APICC's 2024 USAAF Festival
Overview of one portion of an iteration of the In My Fluffy Pajamas project
“In My Fluffy Pajamas: From Silk Road to San Francisco” is an iteration of the project that centers the voices of people who immigrated from places that were historically on the path of the Silk Road. Workshops were open to others with emphasis on this community, fostering cross-cultural exchange. Workshops were held at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco and ARTogether in Oakland.
One portion of this iteration was funded through a grant from the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center as part of the 27th Annual United States Asian American Festival. This portion consisted of three workshops creating art work that was then displayed at San Francisco City Hall. This page shares more information about APICC USAAF and the workshops that were held as part of our participation in that festival.
About APICC USAAF
“The Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center’s (APICC) mission is to support and present multidisciplinary art reflective of the unique experiences of Asian Pacific Islanders living in the United States.”
“Each year, the United States of Asian American Festival (USAAF) presents up to 20 different programs reflecting the artistic accomplishments and cultural diversity of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander and Asian American communities. USAAF showcases artists representing a diverse range of ethnic and cultural groups and aims to heighten the visibility of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) artists working in all disciplines - theater, music, dance, film, literature, visual arts, and more! Our goal is to nurture and empower these groups to be self-sufficient while providing the support they need to grow.”
2024 Theme: Be(long)ing Here
Also from the website:
“This year’s theme, Be(long)ing Here, asks us what being and belonging means for ourselves and our communities. The festival will honor AAPI arts and culture reflecting on where we have been, where we are now, and what our collective future holds while acknowledging our roots as immigrants, refugees, and mixed-race descendants.”

San Francisco City Hall Exhibit
We were honored to have some of the artwork created as part of this festival exhibited in the offices of Supervisor Matt Dorsey in San Francisco City Hall. It is so empowering to display this work in a political public space, validating the participants’ experiences, amplifying the stories of immigrants and highlighting the value of community-created art. This visibility is crucial for immigrants and historically marginalized groups, as it demonstrates that their voices matter and are influential.
