In My Fluffy Pajamas Invited to Join Hungry Ghost Festival
The project's first iteration of a one-day public event that engages a large scale number of collective voices in San Francisco's Chinatown
We are thrilled to announce that “In My Fluffy Pajamas” has been invited by the prestigious Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco to be part of the 2nd annual Hungry Ghost Festival on August 17th, 2024. This invitation allows us to realize the dream of adding an interactive public engagement element to the project. By offering a collaborative community art opportunity at festivals, fairs and other public events, we allow more people to add their voices to the collective archive.
A Continuation of Our Ongoing Project
Past iterations of the project have all been held indoors in small groups requiring pre-registration. See an example here:
Adapting to a Festival Setting
This workshop approach has been adapted to allow for greater all-ages participation with the public in an outdoor festival setting. “In My Fluffy Pajamas: Hungry Ghosts” is a shorter, more dynamic interaction. Fabric and Sharpies are set up at two tables and all festival attendees are invited to add their voices to this collective story.
In keeping with this year’s Festival theme of “Downpour, Uproar,” which encourages “chasing the emotions and catharsis of rage and sorrow,” the project has been edited to encourage participants to take a moments to think about the foods and plants that their own ancestors loved the most. They are then invited to draw a bird that will carry this offering to those ancestors. This is our way of giving to the Hungry Ghosts while also spreading recognition that no matter where we come from or how long we have been here, we all have basic deeply rooted things in common that we can connect around, such as food and plants.
The finished fabrics will be added to the ongoing archive of “In My Fluffy Pajamas” visual artwork, which will be displayed in various public settings in the months and years to come. Participants will be given a small tactile token of appreciation that they can take with them as a thread to stay connected to this project and to all of the people who have been part of it.
Hungry Ghost Festival
Please join us on August 17, 2024 from 4 pm - 9 pm at the Chinatown Hungry Ghost Festival.
The inaugural event last year was a terrific success bringing together approximately 10,000 people. San Francisco’s Chinatown will once again transform into a rousing celebration honoring ancestors and guiding the wandering spirits back through the night and we are honored to have this project be a part of it this year.
In addition to our project, there are many other artists, performers, vendors and activities. “In My Fluffy Pajamas” will take place in the plaza at Portsmouth Square; come by and add your voice to the collective story.
